American modernism

In the first decade of the 20th century, American photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz offered an amazing alternative to European artists who then dominated the art world. He demonstrated the home-grown talents of four brave young artists: Georgia O'Keefe, Marsden Hartley, Arthur Dawa and John Marina.

Despite the unmistakable individual styles, these artists shared a bold approach to color and created forms that evoked rather than described nature.
