Bruegel's Material World

Exhibition December 1, 2019 − September 6, 2020
ThisExhibition dedicated to one of the most iconic paintings of the Detroit Institute of Arts - "Wedding Dance" by Peter Bruegel (1566), on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the artist's death.

The painting was considered a sensational discovery when it was acquired by the museum in 1930 and served as an inspiration for Diego Rivera, and remains one of the two main Bruegel paintings in the American collection.

Using the prism of preserving art, the exhibition traces the life of the painting from its creation to the present, emphasizing its status as a material object; from its very loose design and its fine paint application to the conservation treatments and restorations to which it was subjected over time.
