Christian Wilhelm Ernst
Dietrich (Dietrich)

Germany • 1712−1774

Thanks to the patronage of the Saxon Minister of gr. Bruhl, he completed his artistic education in Italy and returned to Dresden, became court painter to the elector Friedrich August II. Subsequently was Professor of the Dresden Academy. and the inspector of the local galleries. In his painting it is very well imitated by first the Dutch and Flemish masters, Poelenburgh, Ostade, Bergamo, Rembrandt, etc., and then, though with less success, the giants of Italian painting. Therefore, the content of his paintings and the manner of their execution is extremely diverse; in all, better managed landscapes.
