Portrait of A.P. Sheremeteva, the eldest daughter of P. B. Sheremetev

Painting, 1760-th

Description of the artwork «Portrait of A.P. Sheremeteva, the eldest daughter of P. B. Sheremetev»

Sheremeteva Anna Petrovna (1744-1768). Countess, the eldest daughter of P.B. and V.A. Sheremetevs, the owners of the estates Ostankino and Kuskovo, the granddaughter of an associate of Peter I.

By order of his owner, the artist paints a portrait of his daughter.

The actress is an amateur, an artist. Since 1760 - maid of honor. In 1768 she was engaged to Count NI Panin (1718-1783), a prominent statesman, diplomat, educator of Paul I. Two weeks before the wedding, she died of smallpox. According to legend, she was deliberately infected by her rivals, who put a piece of clothes from a smallpox patient in a casket under the guise of a gift. Thus, the portrait became a posthumous portrait of a talented girl who died early.

The portrait was commissioned for the wedding day, at first the girl was depicted in a white dress, decorated with roses similar to the one that now adorns her hair. After the death of Sheremeteva, the relatives asked the artist to write down the clothes, changing the light outfit for a dark fur coat.

The portrait is convincing in conveying the external similarity of the model, the texture of clothing and jewelry. The artist painstakingly paints out individual features - an elongated face oval, narrow eyes, heavy eyelids. Errors in the drawing and pictorial technique of Argunov are redeemed by the elegant color scheme, refined juxtaposition of complex tones.
