The 17th century in the history of Dutch art turned out to be extremely rich in talented, great artists. Among them, one of the most prominent places belongs to Adrian van Ostade (Adriaen van Ostade, 1610-1685). Along with his "brothers in the brush" he was a representative of genre painting. But, unlike them, Ostade preferred not to depict noble burghers, aristocrats and military, but poor hard workers from slums and taverns. This allows us to consider him the founder of the peasant genre in Dutch art. Adrian van Ostade was born in Haarlem in 1610 in the family of a small craftsman. Father at the time of the birth of the future artist changed his occupation - he became not a baker, but a weaver. The family had three sons, and only the eldest, Jan, followed in the footsteps of his father, inheriting his workshop. Adrian and Isaac were separated for 11 years, but they shared common interests and joint creativity: Adrian became a mentor to his younger brother in the art world. In 1627, Adrian entered the studio of the famous painter Frans Hals and six years later was accepted into the Harlem guild of painters. But until 1639, he copied the drawing style of his teacher. In the workshop, Ostada met Adrian Brauver, who loved to depict the life and customs of the lower strata of Dutch society. It was under the influence of this Flemish that he found the main theme of his work - the image of peasant life, and from him adopted the increased expressiveness, “brutality” in the image of the characters, sharp contrasts between light and shadow. But the "borrowings" did not last long, since aggressiveness was alien to Ostada's lyrical talent. Grotesque and causticity give way to soft and kind humor. These changes are clearly visible in the series of paintings "Five Senses", which became a kind of reaction of the artist to the ideals of "high art" of the aristocratic aesthetics of that time. He loved Adrian and the theme of creative work. "The painter in his studio", now located in Dresden, is nothing more than a kind of self-portrait. Soft light penetrates through the window with patterned weaves, things are scattered in a mess, the modest atmosphere of the workshop, the plot's hero - a painter - stands behind an easel, immersed in work. The mature period begins in the 1650s, and it was at that time that Ostade wrote his best works. After meeting Rembrandt, he goes on to a soft, golden brown color. In the XVII century, art historians generally put the names of these artists on a par. Van Gogh, a century later, traveling around Holland, he noticed that he met among the villagers "a mass of Ostadov types, physiognomies that resemble pigs or crows." It is worth noting that the works of Ostade found their fans in our country. Peter I highly appreciated the work of the painter and even began a collection of his works in Russia. Now the artist’s canvases can be seen in Penza, St. Petersburg, Ryazan. Canvases of Adrian van Ostade attract with their warmth, radiant humor, soft outlines and liveliness.
