Description of the original:
The picture "Cossacks" Ilya Repin wrote based on the historical events of 1676. Calling on the Cossack army to surrender, the Turkish Sultan Mahmud IV sent them an official letter. According to the rules of official correspondence of that time, Mahmud at the beginning of the letter provided a huge list of his titles and regalia. This pompous message with the proposal to surrender without a fight very amused the Cossacks, and they decided to write their sarcastic answer to the Turkish sultan.

The picture does not depict movement as such, but it is imbued with dynamism, the composition is very balanced. In the foreground, the artist depicted the Cossacks, who gathered at a roughly knocked together table. Repin tried to push the boundaries of the picture, depicting the figures of some Cossacks not completely, cutting them off. In the background are tents and burning bonfires - there is a Cossack camp.
Repin did not begin to single out the main character, each Cossack in his own way is colorful. Repin painted the figure of each Cossack with special care, achieving portrait similarity of each character in the painting.
A cheerful, friendly atmosphere reigns on the canvas. Cossacks laughed heartily, looking for suitable phrases and words for an answer! Loud ranks and pompous phrases have no meaning for them; distance to the battlefield is more important for them.

The Cossacks vied with each other for a smiling clerk who, cunningly smiling, displays accurate words on paper. Each character in the picture literally glows with confidence, strength and retirement, it is clear that they are all a united force. This is the power and invincibility of the Cossack community.
