The son of a Prague sculptor Josef max (1804-1855) and Anna Schumann. He worked with his father until his death and attended classes at the Academy of his native town until 1858, and then for 3 years he studied at the Vienna Academy. In 1863 he went to Munich and entered a student of Piloty. Leaving the workshop of Piloty in 1869, Max Gabriel settled in Munich, where he became Professor in the Academy.
Gabriel Cornelius Ritter von Max was one of the most important. painters of the present time, the son of a Prague sculptor Josef M. (1804-55); b. in 1840, he worked with his father until his death and attended classes at the Academy of his native town until 1858, and then for 3 years he studied at the Vienna Academy. Of his paintings, over the two, especially contributed to its popularity even "Strangled St. Ludmila", "the Nun in the garden", "Widow", "Sisters of mercy", "Every night in tears", "Spring Adagio", "Autumn rain", "Knemometry Julia" (by Shakespeare), "Blind saleswoman lamps at the entrance to the catacombs", "the Lion's bride" (Chamisso), "the wandering Jew before the corpse of the child", "the Beheaded Gretchen", "Vivisector", "The resurrection of Jairus's daughter" (one of the finest works of the artist), "not made with hands the image of the Savior", "Infanticide" (ballad of bürger), "Kiss of the spirit" and "Suleika". In all these works, embodying rarely more than two figures, M is not so much creative genius, easily coping with complex compositions, how thoughtful, sensitive, sometimes oversensitive, nervous artist seeking to embody in painting, so to speak, to emphasize ideas that constitute a direct heritage of poetry.
