Description of the artwork «CAT AND DOG»

In the Nikolaev Regional Art Museum. V.V. Vereshchagin exhibited painting I.F. Groota "Cat and Dog". It depicts a dramatic scene from the life of pets. The cat threw and broke the cage, pulled a small bird out of it, then jumped into the bench with it and tries to eat it. A small dog standing on the floor barks at the cat, protecting the bird.
Although the picture has greatly darkened over almost 220 years of its existence, it is clear that the decor of the room and the animals were painted very lively and realistic. The artist uses the rules of linear and aerial perspective, conveys the volume of objects, the natural color and texture of a wooden bench and plank floor. With light glaze, the artist conveys the natural color of wool and feathers. More pasty smears of almost pure whitewash emphasize the texture. On the floor lies a broken light brown cage, next to it are fragments of twigs and an overturned dark green drinker. The diagonal construction of the composition, the shift of the main objects down and left contrast with the empty upper right corner. This gives the composition a dynamic and enhances the drama of the situation.
