Painting, 1440-th , 42×64 cm

Description of the artwork «Double portrait (portrait of the men and women at the window)»

The companion portrait for several centuries was considered the work of an unknown author of the XV century and only relatively recently been attributed to fra Filippo Lippi. Despite the recent anonymity to mention it was only like "famous pair portrait from the Metropolitan Museum of art".

What is he famous for? The fact that much related to this pattern occurred in Italian art for the first time. The first double portrait. One of the first portraits in the interior. Finally, one of the first images of the woman in no way connected with a religious theme. Of course, Filippo Lippi wrote his Madonnas with the usual beautiful floristic and gave them images of exceptional vitality. But the image of a woman as she is, in her own social roles and household specifics – for art of the XV century, it became the real breakthrough.

One of the most compelling versions we have before us something like a wedding portrait. Researcher Federico Zeri found on the embroidered pearl sleeve heroine word lealt that in Italian means "loyalty", "commitment" or "faithfulness." This was interpreted as a pledge of allegiance, from which was born the assumption that the couple in front of us. Another interpretation, by contrast, comes from the fact that the characters are not yet married or even engaged, as in the picture they are separated by a barrier in the form of a wall with a window.

The nature of the relationship men and women were also interpreted in different ways: some say that between them there is an undeniable emotional intimacy, others pay attention to what the characters in the movie don't even look at each other, as their eyes are on different levels.

There are quite reliable assumptions about who is depicted in the portrait. They come from such important details: men hands on the portrait are on the family crest of the family Scolari. It is believed that we have before us the representative of this genus – Lorenzo Ranieri Scolari. A woman is in all probability, became his wife in about the year 1436 Angiola di Bernardo Sapiti.

Vasari according to an interesting fact from the biography of Lippi: senior customers are often decried of the artist because he is not a well-written hands: "therefore, fra Filippo since, when he wrote that most of their hands in order to avoid this reproach was covered by either clothing or something else". Hands on a "Double portrait" is executed quite skillfully, but the funny thing is that they really are half hidden from the eye.

Some believe typical of Lippi the technique used in "double portrait": to identify the facial features are rather generalized, but the most carefully finished with details like pattern of fabrics and the quality of the pearls. It is in the profile picture is the most visible Barber fashion, typical of the mid-fifteenth century, the plucking of the hair, pushes the hairline, and visually enlarge the forehead. With masterful subtlety written pearl jewelry and a complicated headdress of the heroine.

Specialists also noted that the value of the landscape outside the window it is also made very carefully and in detail and could be an independent picture.
